FOREST, Va. – Five Yellow Jackets, including a trio of seniors, have been honored by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with All-Conference honors in voting by its head coaches and as announced by the league office Thursday.
Senior forward Bryan Lutz (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and sophomore midfielder Anthony Astruc (Glen Allen, Va./Benedictine) were named to the All-ODAC First Team while senior midfielder Peter Nelson (Charleston, W.Va.), senior defender Jacob McHugh (Aberdeen, Md./West Nottingham Academy) and sophomore defender Paul Duffy (Salem, Va./Salem) were named to the All-ODAC Third Team.
Lutz completes the 2017 season as the top goal-scorer on the team with eight goals. He added three assists to total 19 points. Lutz finished with the third-most goals in the conference as well as the fourth-most points. Four of his goals were game winners, including a double-overtime header to beat Catholic on September 20 – a match that was two minutes away from being declared a tie. This marks Lutz's second All-ODAC nod; in 2015, he earned Third Team honors. Lutz leaves R-MC with 19 goals scored and seven assists to total 45 points. Lutz's 19 goals are the most by any R-MC player since 2004.
Astruc finishes the season with four goals and three assists to total 11 points. His assist effort ranks in the Top 20 in the ODAC, while his number of goals scored ranks in the Top 25. More than that, Astruc's work across the middle and into the attacking third proved to allow Randolph-Macon to gain plenty of chances to score throughout the season. It's Astruc's second All-ODAC honor; in 2016 he was named to the Third Team.
Nelson finishes the 2017 campaign with his most successful season to date. Tallying four goals and an assist along with nine points, Nelson was also a team emotional leader, rallying the team at critical moments. Nelson finishes his career with eight goals and four assists totaling 20 points. It's Nelson's first All-ODAC nod.
McHugh also had his best year ever, at least offensively. He scored seven goals and two assists to total 16 points from his right back position. In his main role as defender though, he was a force, requiring opponents to adjust to his playing style – aggressive to the ball and able to serve the ball deep into the attacking third. He converted two penalty kicks this year – the only two opportunities for Randolph-Macon this season. He finishes his career with 11 goals and six assists to total 28 points.
McHugh and fellow defender Duffy were part of a defense that recorded ten clean sheets. Duffy was part of a group that only allowed a 0.75 goals against average all season – second in the ODAC. Duffy also scored three goals from the back line and added three assists to total nine points this season. It's Duffy's first All-ODAC recognition of his career.
Randolph-Macon finished its 2017 campaign at 14-3-1 and 6-2-1 in the ODAC, its best season for number of wins since 1994.
