Kontopanos Wins Twice to Lead R-MC Men's Swimming at YJI

CHESTERFIELD, Va. - Sophomore Victor Kontopanos (North Chesterfield, Va./Home School) earned a pair of firsts and contributed 222 points as the Randolph-Macon men's swimming team moved up to third out of seven teams after the third and final session of the Yellow Jacket Invitational Saturday at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center.

Kontopanos finished first in the 100 Fly in 52.03 for 32 points, less than one second away from his program record. He also won the 200 Fly in 1:54.28 for 32 points. Kontopanos was part of three relay teams: third place in the 800 Free, fourth in the 200 Medley and fourth in the 400 Free.

Senior captain Bryan McCarthy (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) finished second in the 100 Fly in 53.08 for 28 points. His time was No. 5 on the program's all-time list. McCarthy was also part of the third-place 800 Free relay team and the fourth-place 400 Free relay team.

Freshman Wyatt Boyer (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork) continued his strong meet by contributing to 214 points on Day 2. Boyer took second in the 400 IM in 4:15.42 for 28 points. His time was No. 4 on the program's all-time list. Boyer was also second in the 1650 Free in 16:39.84 for 28 points. His time was No. 4 on the program's all-time list. Boyer joined Kontopanos on three relay teams: third place in the 800 Free, fourth in the 200 Medley and fourth in the 400 Free.

The Yellow Jackets had seven swimmers earn points in the 400 IM. Besides Boyer, sophomore Matthew Parisi (Williamsburg, Va./Millwood School) was seventh in 4:35.14 for 23 points. Junior Matt Howard (Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe) was 10th in 4:43.75 for 17 points. Senior Jordan Witherow (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) was 11th in 4:44.52 with 16 points. Sophomore Jason Sallade (Bristow, Va./Brentsville) was 14th in 5:05.96 with 13 points. Sophomore Oliver Allen (Seminole, Fla./Osceola) was 16th at 5:16.87 for 11 points. Sophomore William Pimblett (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) was 17th in 5:22.20 for nine points.

Freshman Shane Morison (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) finished 10th in the 100 Breast in 1:03.82 for 17 points. His time was No. 10 on the program's all-time list. Sophomore Patrick Lancaster (Greensboro, N.C./Bishop McGuinness Catholic) was 15th in a personal-best time of 1:06.94 for 12 points. Sallade also had a personal-best time of 1:10.23 for 18th place for seven points.

Morison was eighth in the 200 Breast in 2:18.91 for 22 points. His time was No 7 on the program's all-time list.

In the 200 Free, personal-best times were recorded by freshman Justin Gregory (Bristow, Va./Brentsville) (1:50.75, 13th, 14 points) and sophomore Andrew Carr (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) (1:57.63, 4 points).

Freshman Joe Stephens (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) took sixth in the 100 Back in 54.05 for 24 points. It was the No. 4 time on the program's all-time list. Andy McCarthy finished ninth in 57.49 for 20 points. Junior Jacob Cox (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) posted a personal-best time of 1:01.02 to finish 15th for 12 points.

Along with Boyer, R-MC had seven other swimmers earn points, including half of the top 10 finishers. Gregory was seventh in 17:31.02 for 23 points, Witherow was eighth in 17:59.84 for 22 points, Parisi was ninth in 18:00.11 for 20 points and Seif was 10th in 18:04.23 for 17 points.

Stephens and Parisi moved onto the program's all-time list for the 200 Back. Stephens was seventh in 1:59.96 for 23 points. His time was No. 5 on the all-time list. Parisi was 10th in 2:06.09 for 17 points. His time was No. 8 on the all-time list.

Randolph-Macon returns to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. at home against Randolph.
