ASHLAND, Va.—Senior John Adam (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) and sophomore Baxter Carter (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) rallied to win 8-5 at No. 1 doubles as the Randolph-Macon men's tennis team fell 7-2 to No. 10 Harford in exhibition action Sunday afternoon.
The Owls (1-1) were ranked No. 10 in the first National Junior College Athletic Association poll of the season, administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Junior Alex Curnow (Culpeper, Va. / Midlothian) dropped the first set 7-6 and won the second set 6-2 to force the third set tiebreaker. Curnow won the tiebreaker at No. 5 singles to give the Yellow Jackets (2-1, 1-1 ODAC) the singles victory.
Freshman Jacob Haines (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) claimed the first set 6-2 before falling 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
In doubles action, Curnow and senior Tom Lewis (Charlottesville, Va. / Western Albemarle) teamed at No. 2 while Haines and junior Pablo Bordas (Caracas, Venezuela / Briar Woods) paired at No. 3. Both pairings fell 8-3 to the Owls.
Randolph-Macon returns to action at home on Friday, March 11 against Penn. State-Abington. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at the Banks Tennis Center.
