ASHLAND, Va. – With the overall team match tied 4-4, freshman Erik Moulton (Yorktown, Va. / York) came from three match points behind in a tiebreaker to prove victorious in his #5 singles match against University of Pikeville's Hassan Haider 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11). His win pushed R-MC into the win column 5-4 for the team's fourth win of the season.
UPIKE was able to win at the top half of the lineup for both singles and doubles. Doubles #1 duo of senior Baxter Carter (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's School) and freshman Alex Hein (Windermere, Fla. / Windermere Preparatory School) dropped their match to the Bears' #1 duo of Bailey Horne and Andres Alvarez 8-2. #2 doubles duo of sophomore Grant Sarver (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) and Moulton defeated the UPIKE duo of Devon Sgubin and Haider 8-3. Junior Jacob Haines (Springfield, Va. / West Sprinfield) and sophomore Shane Berry (Midlothian, Va. / James River) were notched into the win column by default.
The singles competition ran similar to the doubles side. UPIKE secured wins over R-MC's #1, #2 and #3 singles competitors: Sarver (3-6, 2-6), Hein (2-6, 0-6) and Carter (4-6, 0-6) respectively.
Berry, the #4 singles competitor notched R-MC's first singles win, defeating his opponent, Kenton Hall with a shutout, 6-0, 6-0. Moulton, the last to finish, secured the clinching victory for Randolph-Macon from the #5 spot.
Sophomore Brycen Boettcher (Keysville, Va. / Randolph Henry) was also awarded a victory by default.
Randolph-Macon next faces Shenandoah in a conference match on Sunday at 1:00 PM at the Banks Tennis Center.
