Lynchburg Bests Men’s Tennis

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Baxter Carter (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's School) and freshman Alex Hein (Windermere, Fla. / Windermere Preparatory School) got a win in doubles while junior Shane Berry (Midlothian, Va. / James River) and sophomore Grant Sarver (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) got wins in singles, but it was not enough to overcome the surging Hornets as Lynchburg bested Randolph-Macon 6-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Thursday afternoon.

Hein and Carter took the 8-4 win in #1 doubles over their opponents, Zack Shane and Will Nsoesie. The win was the duo's sixth of the season, all from #1 doubles.

Sarver and freshman Erik Moulton (Yorktown, Va. / York) were not able to overcome LC's Luke Sablik and Nick Savino, losing 8-2. R-MC's #3 duo of Berry and fellow junior Jacob Haines (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) won a pair of games as well, but lost the match 8-2.

In singles, Sarver won his tenth match of the season and sixth in a row as he defeated Nsoesie 6-3, 6-3. Sarver has won all of his matches from the #2 singles spot this season.

Berry also won his match, his ninth of the year. Berry has played #4, #5 and #6 singles this season, winning today against Colton Mullins 6-0, 6-2 in the #5 spot.

LC's Juan Borga was able to win in #1 singles, defeating Haines 6-1, 6-3. Shane also defeated Moulton with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in #4 singles.

Hein became locked in set tie-break after losing the first set 6-4. Hein fought against Sablik, playing deep into set two winning six games and forcing the best of seven attempt to win the set Sablik was able to win the needed points to win the set and match 7-6 (7-3).

Sophomore Jack Aprahamian (Richmond, Va. / Trinity) also found himself in a match tie-break situation. After Savino won the first set 6-2, Aprahamian fought back to win the second set 7-5. That forced and ten-point match break, which Savino won 11-9, winning the third set and the match.

Randolph-Macon will now face Guilford on Saturday at 1:00 PM at the Banks Tennis Center in Ashland. The team will mark senior day at the match.
