Men’s Volleyball Overcomes Late Phoenix Run To Win

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Randolph-Macon took the first two sets, but Wilson challenged in the latter two sets, setting up a winner take all fifth set, which needed extra points to get a victor. When the dust settled, Randolph-Macon got the win 3-2 (25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 16-14).

Randolph-Macon was led by junior Lee Olenyik (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) who made 12 kills on 35 attempts. Freshman Scotty Carter (Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox) was close behind on 11 kills on 29 attempts. Junior Corban Jungers (Richmond, Va. / J.R. Tucker) made seven kills as well while freshman Lenny Sampson, Jr. (Chesapeake, Va. / Indian River) made six kills. R-MC hit .172 for the match.

Junior Brian Stephen (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) led the team in the assist line, scoring 34 assists. Freshman Merrick Gessler (Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox) added in 12 assists as well.

Defensively, R-MC was led by freshman Arjay Harris (Chesapeake, Va. / Hickory), who made 12 digs.

At the net, freshman Dayne Iverson (Pasco, Wash. / Chiawana) led the team with four blocks, including two solo efforts. Carter was close behind with three blocks and one solo block. Sampson had two, as did Olenyik. Gessler had one block.

In service, Sampson was excellent, adding two service aces to the stat lines. Stephen and freshman Connor Logan (Montpelier, Va. / Patrick Henry) each had one as well. Freshman Kyle Alberici (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero North Syracuse) added a kill on the day as well.

Randolph-Macon returns to action next weekend as the team takes on conference-mate Rutgers-Newark at 7:00 PM on Friday evening. The team will also face Kean on Saturday in Continental Volleyball Conference action before taking on non-conference foe Lehman. Kean is the reigning CVC Champions and is ranked fifth in the nation.
