Whittemore Throws Near-Perfect Game in Sweep of Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore pitcher Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./ Patrick Henry) earned her 11th win of the season and was one inning short of a perfect game in game one of a double-header sweep of Mary Washington. The R-MC softball team won game one by a score of 7-0, Whittemore threw five strikeouts with no runs, no walks and one only hit, which came in the bottom of the seventh inning.  In game two, R-MC came from behind to win 4-2, in which Whittemore came in for a save.

The Yellow Jackets took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after sophomore Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./ Grafton) singled to left field and would score from third base after sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./ Essex) singled to left field.

R-MC would score four runs in the top of the third inning. Roth and Wood both hit singles and their second hits of the game to get on base. Junior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./ Brunswick) then singled to send both runners to home plate. Jones and junior Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./ Clover Hill) would then score after to increase the lead to 5-0. R-MC scored four runs on five hits in the third.

In the top of the seventh, Toth would hit a single to center to send Wood and junior Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./ Rappahannock) to home.

Toth had three hits in three at bats for two rbi in the game.

In game two, Mary Washington led 2-1 after four innings, but a three run fifth inning would power the Yellow Jackets into the deciding 4-2 lead.

With sophomore Cori Spartana (Baltimore, Md./ St. Timothy's) on third base and Roth on second, freshman Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va./ Glen Allen) reached first base on a fielder's choice, sending Spartana to score and Roth to third. Next at bat was Wood, who flied out to center but would send Roth and Stone to home, which would give the Yellow Jackets the 4-2 win.

Sophomore Maddie Holcomb (Goochland, Va./ Goochland) earned her first win of the season in the game. Whittemore also earned a save.

The #15 ranked R-MC Yellow Jackets improve to 18-2 for the season while the Eagles fall to 16-12.

R-MC will be back in action on Saturday, April 1st for a road ODAC double-header against Guilford.
