ASHLAND, Va. - Sophomore Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) tossed a one-hit shutout in the opener and freshman Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) drove in three on the day as the 16th-ranked Randolph-Macon softball team run-ruled Methodist twice on Sunday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (23-7) took Game 1 by a score of 9-0 in five innings and batted around twice in the fourth in Game 2 on their way to a 13-2 victory in five innings over the Monarchs (8-30).
Whittemore (15-3) faced the minimum 15 in the opener. The lone base-runner was pinch-hitter Lindsey Champion, who had a leadoff single in the third. She was doubled off first on a liner to third to end the inning. Whittemore did not walk a batter and fanned four.
R-MC started the scoring in the first. Sophomore Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) had a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on a flyout and scored on a base hit by sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex). Junior Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) homered with two away to give the home team a 3-0 lead.
In the second, freshman Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Margaret's) had a one-out single and advanced to third on a double by Davidson. Roth put down a beautiful squeeze bunt to plate Hill, and junior Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock) drove in two with a double to make it 6-0 after two innings.
Junior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./Brunswick) had a one-out double in the third, moved to third on a single and scored on a double by Hill to make it 7-0. Davidson followed with a two-run single to give the Yellow Jackets a 9-0 advantage.
Davidson had two hits and two RBI, while Mulvena and Toth both knocked in two. Hill went 2 for 2 with two runs and one RBI.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the first in Game 2. Freshman Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) had a leadoff single, stole second and scored on a base hit by sophomore Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va./Prince George) to give R-MC a 1-0 lead. MU scored single runs in the third and fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
The R-MC bats would explode in the bottom of the fourth as the Yellow Jackets sent 18 players to the plate and tallied 12 runs. Davidson had an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2 and Stone was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to put R-MC on top for good. Wood, Roth and senior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) each had two-run singles in the 12-run frame.
Sophomore Maddie Holcomb (Goochland, Va./Goochland) retired the Monarchs in order in the top of the fifth on three groundouts to end the contest. Holcomb (2-1) allowed two hits and an unearned run in 2.2 innings with one walk and two strikeouts.
