CARY, N.C. – Junior Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) hurled a four-hit and later picked up a save as the Randolph-Macon softball team recorded a pair of wins on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets defeated Rowan 3-0 in the morning before edging North Carolina Wesleyan 3-2 in the afternoon.
The Profs were receiving votes in the preseason poll, but Whittemore (1-1) quieted their bats. She allowed just four hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
R-MC would snap the scoreless tie with Rowan in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) drew a leadoff walk, stole second, was sacrificed to third by Whittemore and came home on a groundout by junior Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, R-MC would double its advantage. Sophomore Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Margaret's) drew a base on balls to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by freshman Kaitlyn Deeter (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt). Hill moved to third when sophomore Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) grounded out to the pitcher. Roth drove in Hill with a double to left as the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets would add an insurance run in the sixth. Wood walked to start the inning and went to second when sophomore Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) reached on a bunt single. Senior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./Brunswick) moved both runners up one base with a sacrifice before Wood scored on a groundout by junior Brittany LaPrade (Quinton, Va./New Kent), giving R-MC a 3-0 edge.
Davidson finished with two hits for the Yellow Jackets.
Against NCWC, R-MC started the scoring in the bottom of the second. Jones led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Deeter reached on an error, allowing Jones to scamper to third. Hill had an infield single to drive in Jones to make it 1-0.
The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the fifth. Deeter drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on an infield hit by Hill. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice by sophomore Taylor Sanderford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee). Deeter scored on a groundout by Roth, and Hill came home on an error, as R-MC took a 3-0 advantage.
The Battling Bishops tallied single runs in the sixth and seventh and put the tying run on third with two away. Whittemore came in from the bullpen and got a popout to short to record the save.
Hill went 2 for 2 with one run and one RBI for the victors.
Freshman Kayley Scott (Henrico, Va./Lee-Davis) raised her record to 2-0, going 6.2 innings with nine hits, one earned run, two walks and four strikeouts.
