CARY, N.C. – Senior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./Brunswick) homered and drove in four in the first game and sophomore Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) went deep twice in Game 2 as the Randolph-Macon softball team extended its win streak to five with a pair of victories on Sunday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (5-1) posted a 7-2 win over Piedmont and edged Salem 3-2.
In Game 1, the Lions (3-7) scored a run in the bottom of the first. R-MC tallied all its runs over the final three innings. In the fifth, junior Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) reached on an error and junior Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) singled. Jones brought both home with a double and later scored herself to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-1 lead.
R-MC would add two in the sixth before Jones homered in the top of the seventh to make it 6-1. Sophomore Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Margaret's) walked, stole second and scored on a base hit by sophomore Taylor Sanderford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) to put the Yellow Jackets up 7-1. Piedmont tallied its final run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final 7-2.
Freshman Kayley Scott (Henrico, Va./Lee-Davis) pitched five innings to pick up the win and raise her record to 3-0. Freshman Madie Rhoads (Portsmouth, Va./Nansemond River) fanned four over the final two innings in her collegiate debut.
In the second game, R-MC started its scoring in the third as freshman Kaitlyn Deeter (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt) and sophomore Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) had consecutive doubles to give the Yellow Jackets their first run. Davidson went deep in the fourth and sixth innings to complete the scoring for R-MC.
Junior Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) went the distance to raise her record to 2-1.
Randolph-Macon has its home opener on Saturday, March 3 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Frostburg State.
