Whittemore Fans Career-High 14 as #16 R-MC Softball Sweeps FSU

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) tossed a two-hit shutout with a career-best 14 strikeouts in the opener as the 16th-ranked Randolph-Macon softball team swept a home doubleheader from Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets (7-1) took the opener 6-0 and run-ruled the Bobcats 10-2 in six innings in the nightcap. R-MC extended its win streak to seven, while FSU fell to 2-4.

Whittemore (3-1) walked two in earning the victory.

R-MC started the scoring in the second. With two away, freshman Kaitlyn Deeter (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt) singled up the middle. She stole second and came home on a base hit by sophomore Taylor Sanderford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.

An inning later, sophomore Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) had a leadoff single and junior Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) reached on an error. Both scored on a single by sophomore Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) to give the home team a 3-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets doubled their advantage in the fourth. Deeter had a leadoff homer, Sanderford was hit by a pitch and scored on a passed ball, and sophomore Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Margaret's) singled and came home on a groundout by freshman Lauren Richardson (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) as the Yellow Jackets went ahead 6-0.

In Game 2, Deeter and senior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./Brunswick) both drove in three as R-MC rallied for the win.

FSU scored twice in the first before freshman Madie Rhoads (1-0) took over on the mound in the second. She tossed five scoreless frames with one hit, one walk and seven strikeouts to earn her first collegiate victory.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead for good in the third. Wood had an RBI bunt single and she scored on a double by Jones as R-MC went ahead 3-2. Deeter added a two-run double and she came home on a base hit by Sanderford as the home team took a 6-2 advantage.

Deeter's run-scoring double in the fifth made it a 7-2 lead. R-MC ended the game in the sixth as Davidson delivered a two-run single and Jones added an RBI double to make the final 10-2.

Davidson went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI for the Yellow Jackets.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Tuesday, March 6 with a doubleheader at Methodist at 2 p.m.
