VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Junior Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) went 5 for 5 with five runs and four RBI, and three pitchers combined for 10 scoreless innings with two hits, no walks and 22 strikeouts as the 13th-ranked Randolph-Macon softball team posted a pair of shutouts at the Beach Blast.
The Yellow Jackets (9-1) downed New Rochelle 9-0 in five innings in the first game and defeated Keuka 11-0 in five innings in Game 2.
Freshman Kayley Scott (Henrico, Va./Lee-Davis) tossed five innings in Game 1 with one hit and 11 strikeouts to raise her record to 4-0.
R-MC started the scoring in the bottom of the second as sophomore Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) delivered a two-run single to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead. Wood brought in Stone with a triple and she scored on an error to give R-MC a 4-0 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the fourth. Senior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./Brunswick) had an RBI single and junior Brittany LaPrade (Quiton, Va./New Kent) delivered a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 6-0
R-MC ended the game in the fifth. Wood had a run-scoring single with two away and freshman Lauren Richardson (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) ripped a two-run double to make the final 9-0.
Wood went 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBI, while Stone and Richardson both drove in two.
Junior Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) fanned eight in four innings in the second game with one hit to raise her record to 4-1. Freshman Madie Rhoads (Portsmouth, Va./Nansemond River) struck out the side in the fifth to preserve the victory.
The Yellow Jackets kept the bats going from the start. Wood singled and scored on an error, and Davidson singled and came home on a double by LaPrade to give R-MC a quick 2-0 lead.
The margin doubled in the second as junior Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and Wood delivered RBI singles to make it 4-0.
R-MC put the game away in the third, as a three-run homer by Jones capped a six-run outburst to make it 10-0.
The Yellow Jackets put up their final run in the fourth as junior Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va./Prince George) had a pinch-hit leadoff double and came home on a sacrifice by freshman Kamryn Steinruck (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) to make the final 11-0.
Randolph-Macon continues at the Beach Blast with a pair of games on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets will face Manhattanville at 10 a.m. ad Oswego at 2 p.m.
