FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Randolph-Macon softball scored a pair of wins from Methodist University (8-32) Monday afternoon in non-conference action in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Junior Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va. / Grafton) went 5-8 with two RBIs and three runs scored through the two games. Freshman pitchers Madie Rhoads (Portsmouth, Va. / Nansemond River) and Kayley Scott (Henrico, Va. / Lee-Davis) combined for the scoreless afternoon and combined for 14 strikeouts.
Randolph-Macon 8, Methodist 0 (5 Innings)
Randolph-Macon (24-2) was in control from the get-go.
In the first inning, the leadoff batter, Roth, singled to single field, then stole second base. Sophomore Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va. / Brooke Point) walked and then stole second. Roth stole third during Davidson's at-bat as well. That's when sophomore Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va. / St. Margaret's) stepped into the box, singling to center field and knocking in both runner. Hill was able to score on a throwing error by the pitcher during junior Candace Whittemore's (Montpelier, Va. / Patrick Henry) at bat, while Whittemore was safe at first and advanced to second on the play.
In the second inning, R-MC continued to tally baserunners. Junior Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va. / Prince George) singled and was moved to third when the next batter, Roth, singled through the right side. Junior Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va. / Essex) singled on a bunt moving Roth to second and allowing Abernethy to score.
R-MC added two more in the third. Sophomore Taylor Sanderford (Mechanicsville, Va. / Atlee) singled to become the first Yellow Jacket on base in the inning. Sophomore Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) singled as well, advancing Sanderford. Abernethy walked as the next batter to load the bases. Roth singled to left center, scoring an RBI as Sanderford came home. The next batter, Wood, sacrificed herself on a flyout to right field allowing Stone to score.
With the 6-0 lead, R-MC was able to plate two more in the top of the fifth. Sanderford was hit by a pitch and was bunted to second as Stone sacrificed herself. Roth tallied her fourth hit of the day with a single to right field. An error allowed Sanderford to get home and Roth to move to second. Roth scored her second run of the day as Wood batted her in with an RBI single to center field.
Starting pitcher freshman Madie Rhoads (Portsmouth, Va. / Nansemond River), who pitched the complete game, scored two strikeouts in the bottom of the inning as well as forcing a pop-out to end the game with the 8-0 tally for R-MC. Rhoads struck out seven in the game and allowed a single hit to the Monarchs.
Roth went 4-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Wood was 2-3 with three RBI on the game and Hill added two RBIs and a run for the game.
Randolph-Macon 7, Methodist 0
Randolph-Macon recorded 15 hits in the nightcap, but didn't plate their first run until the fourth inning.
That's when Hill tripled to center and was hit home via sacrifice fly out by junior Brittany LaPrade (Quinton, Va. / New Kent).
R-MC added a pair of runs in the fifth inning off the bat of senior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va. / Brunswick). She singled to center field, scoring junior Sarah Cimring (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) and Wood. Cimring was pinch running for Davidson, who had singled to get on base. Wood singled to third on a bunt before Davidson, putting two runners on for Jones to hit home.
With the 3-0 lead, the sixth inning broke it open for the Yellow Jackets. After a foul out to lead off the inning, Sanderford singled to center field. The Yellow Jackets tallied another flyout, but then created opportunities with two outs. Abernethy singled down the third base line on a bunt, moving Sanderford to second. Roth approached the batter's box next and sent a single to right field, scoring Sanderford and advancing Abernethy to third. Wood then singled the other way, sending Abernethy home and advancing Roth to second.
A pitching change by Methodist was not enough to take the air away from Randolph-Macon. Davidson singled to right field, scoring Roth and moving Wood up to second. Then Jones scored Wood with a single to left field. R-MC exited the inning with the 7-0 lead, which would be the final score.
Freshman Kayley Scott (Henrico, Va. / Lee-Davis), who started the game, got two of the last three batters to strike out, one of her seven for the evening. Scott also did not allow a single walk en route to her sixth win of the season.
Wood was 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Davidson and Jones were each 2-4. Jones had three RBIs while Davidson added an RBI as well. Stone went 2-3 on the game as well.
Randolph-Macon will face Eastern Mennonite in Harrisonburg at 3:00 on Wednesday as the team returns to Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.
