ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon Women’s Basketball team departs for Madison, NJ this morning at 10:00 am to participate in their ninth trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Yellow Jackets (23-5, 13-3 ODAC) are pitted against Messiah (20-7, 14-4 MAC) in the first round of action and have spent the past week preparing for the Falcons.
R-MC comes into the contest averaging 88.3 points per game (ppg) (third in the nation), having posted six 100+ point games this season. The Jackets’ offense has been led three players averaging 16+ points per game. Junior Taylor Huber (Ashland, VA / Patrick Henry) is averaging 21.4 ppg, shooting .347 behind the arch, and .788 from the line. Sarah Parsons (Glen Allen, VA / J.R. Tucker) averages 17.4 ppg alongside Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, VA / Patrick Henry) who picks up 16.0 ppg. R-MC’s success is also due to ten Jackets contributing 10 or more minutes on the floor. This inclusive approach has allowed R-MC to maintain ball-control and a consistent tempo.
Messiah has been gearing-up for their sixteenth NCAA appearance with a 23-15 all-time record. The Falcons earned an automatic qualifier from the Commonwealth Conference (MAC) following wins over Elizabethtown and Lebanon Valley. MC is averaging 66.0 ppg and is led by seniors Chelsea Danel and Taylor Miller. Danel averages 12.2 ppg while Miller posts 11.3.
Tipoff for round one of the 2014 NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship is 5:00 pm Friday, March 7 in the Ferguson Recreation Center, Madison, NJ. The winner of this contest is set to face victor of FDU Floram versus Wells on Saturday, March 8 at 5:00 pm.
