LYNCHBURG, Va. – Freshman Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C./ Halifax Academy) registered her 13th double with 23 points and 11 rebounds in the 68-55 loss to Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon. The R-MC women's basketball team (9-7, 4-4 ODAC) fell to the Hornets, the 2016 ODAC Champs, (14-3, 8-0 ODAC), who remain in first place.
R-MC trailed by one after the first quarter. Freshman Michal Ross (Glen Allen, Va./ Glen Allen) had six points in the first period, she finished with 20 points from the bench.
The Yellow Jackets used the second quarter to take a 32-29 lead at the half. Williams scored the first eight points for R-MC in the quarter, as it would outscore Lynchburg 18-14.
There were eight lead changes throughout the game and Lynchburg outscored R-MC 39-23 in the second half to remain undefeated in the ODAC.
Both teams shot incredibly well at the free throw line. R-MC shot 100 percent shooting 11 for 11. The hosts shot 92.9% making 13 of 14 free throws.
The R-MC bench contributed with 26 points, 20 of which were from Ross, who added four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Junior Kareema Conteh (Riverdale, Md./ Parkdale) led the team with three steals, she added three rebounds, two assists, a block and two points.
R-MC recorded nine blocks in the game, Williams had three, Ross and junior Amber Lee (Rockville, Va./ Patrick Henry) had two each, while Conteh and junior Teal Reynolds (Sterling, Va./ Potomac Falls) each had one.
The Yellow Jackets will have two home ODAC contests next week. R-MC will take on Bridgewater on Tuesday, January 24 at 7:00 p.m. and then play Randolph on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2:00 p.m.
