Yellow Jackets Defeat Monarchs On Second Day of Tip-Off Classic

Kelly Williams tries a shot

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon defended its home court with a win Saturday during the second day of the R-MC Tip-Off Classic presented by Riesbeck Contracting, taking the game 72-41 over the visiting Methodist Monarchs. Two Yellow Jackets were named to the All-Classic Team for their efforts over the course of the weekend, which saw the Yellow Jackets go 1-1.

Randolph-Macon (2-1) got out to the hot start in the first period with the first six points, four by sophomore Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C. / Halifax Academy) and a jumper by junior Jayla Wade (Newport News, Va. / Heritage). After allowing a bucket by Methodist, R-MC got two big three-pointers from junior Kelsey Wisner (York, Pa. / Central York) and freshman Becca Arrington (Amelia, Va. / Amelia Academy). The Yellow Jackets had as much as a 16-4 lead in the first quarter, but ended the period ahead 20-10. Williams finished the period with a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 boards. Wisner added four points and two assists and two steals.

R-MC continued its good run in the second quarter. After Methodist (0-2) scored four of the first six points, R-MC exploded for ten of the next 12 points, taking the game to the five minute mark and a 32-16 lead. By halftime, R-MC had doubled its first quarter lead and took the 40-20 advantage into the break. Williams scored eight points in the second period, while Wade and sophomore Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va. / Trinity) each added four. Woods pulled down four rebounds in the period as well.

The second half began much like the first -- with four straight points by the Yellow Jackets, with Arrington and Wade both making layups. The R-MC defense went to work through the middle of the third period, only allowing a pair of free throws for almost five minutes of play. The Yellow Jackets took a 55-28 advantage into the final frame. Freshman Elise Knobloch (Glenville, Pa. / Delone Catholic) led the team in the third quarter with five points off the bench as well as a pair of rebounds and a steal.

R-MC took a large run right out of the gates of the final frame. The Yellow Jackets put six on the board quickly with a pair of layups from Williams and a pair of free throws from Wisner. Through the latter half of the quarter, R-MC went on a 7-1 run for a little more than two minutes, taking the clock down to 1:49 before Methodist was able to score again. A free throw from senior Teal Reynolds (Sterling, Va. / Potomac Falls) and a layup by Knobloch ended the game for R-MC as they took the win 72-41.

Williams finished with 25 points and 18 boards, keeping her streak of double-doubles going. She has one in each game so far this season. Defensively, Williams added four blocks and a pair of steals as well. Knobloch had 10 of the 18 R-MC bench points and collected four steals and a pair of rebounds. Woods and Wade each had eight points, with Woods adding ten boards. Wisner and Arrington each had four assists as well as six and seven points respectively. Reynolds, who played a part of the strong R-MC bench, tallied a team-high five steals.

For their performances in the tournament, Woods and Williams were named to the All-Classic team and were presented with an award by Bernie Riesbeck of Riesbeck Contracting, the title sponsor for the R-MC Tip-Off Classic. It's the eighth season Riesbeck has been the title sponsor of the early-season tournament, hosted by the Yellow Jackets.
