ASHLAND, Va. – The University of Valley Forge returned to Ashland Friday night, looking to avenge its loss to Randolph-Macon in the NCAA Tournament back in March. But the Yellow Jackets remained the leaders on its own court as Randolph-Macon sailed to an 85-60 victory in the Randolph-Macon Classic presented by Riesbeck Contracting.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 85, Valley Forge 60

Location/Venue: Crenshaw Gymnasium, Ashland, Va.

Records: Randolph-Macon 1-1, Valley Forge 1-1

How It Happened

  • R-MC got a 7-0 run through the middle of the first quarter and used another 8-4 run with under five minutes to play to build a sizable lead to 19-6. The Yellow Jackets left the first quarter with a 27-10 advantage.
  • Randolph-Macon kept the distance and never allowed the Patriots to get close through the second quarter, leaving the period with a 44-27 halftime buffer.
  • Valley Forge had a run of seven points in a row that ended around the four-minute mark in the third period, but that was only a small portion of the lead R-MC had developed as the team went on to secure the 15 point victory.

Inside The Numbers

  • Junior Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C./Halifax Academy) finished with 20 points and 20 rebounds with junior Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va./Trinity) close behind her on the boards with 19. R-MC outrebounded Valley Forge on the offensive boards 38-8, gaining 23 points on second-chance opportunities.
  • Senior Jayla Wade (Newport News, Va./Heritage) added 12 points to the Yellow Jackets' tally.
  • Junior Michal Ross (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen), sophomore Elise Knobloch (Glenville, Pa./Delone Catholic) and freshman Lauren Lewis (Mount Laurel, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) each made three steals on the night. Ross tallied nine points as well while Lewis hit one from beyond the arc for the Yellow Jackets.
