ASHLAND, Va. - Junior Alex Lightfoot (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) recorded three goals and three assists to lead the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team to a 14-12 ODAC victory over Lynchburg on Senior Day on Saturday at Day Field.
Junior Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tallied four goals and one assist, while sophomore Saunders Riley (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) added two goals and three assists for the Yellow Jackets (10-5, 7-1 ODAC).
R-MC jumped out to a quick lead in the first six minutes as Lightfoot assisted on Hsieh's first goal, while sophomore Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) and freshman Mary Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) both added goals to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead. Following a goal by the Hornets (8-7, 4-4 ODAC), Jones fed Riley for a score and Riley assisted on a goal by senior Jessie Cornbrooks (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan) to push the lead to 5-1 ten minutes into the contest. LC put up a pair of scores before the Yellow Jackets scored the final six goals of the half. Hsieh scored an unassisted goal and fed Cornbrooks on a goal to make it 7-3. Riley assisted on goals by Lightfoot and Jones, and scored herself on a pass from Lightfoot to increase the lead to 10-3 with five minutes remaining in the period. Lightfoot scored on an assist by junior Sarah Alvanos (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) with 1:30 left to five the home team an 11-3 lead at intermission.
Lightfoot scored her third goal three minutes into the second half to give R-MC its largest lead at 12-3 before LC mounted its comeback. The Hornets had six straight goals to pull within three before Lightfoot fed Hsieh to halt the run and give the Yellow Jackets a 13-9 advantage with 8:45 remaining in regulation. LC netted three straight goals to pull the visitors within one before Hsieh's four goal with 32 seconds left made the final 14-12.
Senior Allie Walker (Towson, Md./Mercy) had six saves against nine shots on goal in the first half for the Yellow Jackets, while senior Jamie Langbein (Brookville, Md./Sherwood) snagged two saves in the second half.
Castle topped the Yellow Jackets with four ground balls, while Snee, Alvanos and junior Lucy Andrews (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) each picked up three.
Dee and Snee led R-MC with three caused turnovers.
Randolph-Macon will be the No. 2 seed in the ODAC Tournament. The Yellow Jackets earned a first-round bye and will play the winner of the #3 Roanoke vs. #6 Shenandoah quarterfinal match in the semifinals on Saturday, May 6 at 4 p.m. in Lexington, Va.
