LEXINGTON, Va. - Junior Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) netted six goals and added an assist as the second-seeded Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team downed No. 6 Shenandoah 16-10 Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament.
The Yellow Jackets (11-5) will play for the ODAC title on Sunday at 2 p.m. against top-seeded Washington & Lee, a 14-4 victor over fourth-seeded Lynchburg in the other semifinal contest. R-MC and W&L will play in the championship game for the third straight season. The Generals won 8-7 in 2015 and 16-3 in 2016. The Yellow Jackets are looking for their third championship, while W&L is seeking its 18th crown.
R-MC dominated the first half, scoring four of the first five goals. Senior Jessie Cornbrooks (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan) tallied the first goal just over three minutes into the game on an assist by senior Susie Snee (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll). After the Hornets (7-11) tied the game, freshman Mary Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) had an unassisted goal to put the Yellow Jackets on top for good at 2-1 with 20:17 remaining in the first half. Snee scored on a pass from Cornbrooks and sophomore Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) netted a goal to give R-MC a 4-1 advantage midway through the period. After the Hornets made it a 4-2 contest, Hsieh assisted sophomore Saunders Riley (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) and Riley returned the favor for Hsieh as the Yellow Jackets took a 6-2 lead. SU added another goal before Riley and Cornbrooks both scored to give R-MC an 8-3 halftime lead. The Yellow Jackets held a 14-7 advantage in shots in the first period and won eight of 12 draw controls.
The Hornets had the first two goal of the second half before Hsieh scored twice to give R-MC a 10-5 lead. Following another SU goal, Snee and Hsieh tallied goals to give the Yellow Jackets a 12-6 advantage with 16 minutes left. The teams alternated goals the rest of the way, as Hsieh scored twice and senior Laney Dee (Norfolk, Va./Bishop Sullivan) and Cornbrooks both scored once to make the final 16-10.
Corrnbrooks had three goals and an assist, Riley added two goals and two assists, and Snee chipped in two goals and one assist.
Jones paced the Yellow Jackets with five draw controls, while Snee snared four. Snee and Dee both picked up two ground balls. Sophomore Abby Roth (Bayville, N.J./Donovan Catholic) topped R-MC with three caused turnovers and Hsieh caused a pair.
