
ASHLAND, Va. - Senior Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and freshman Kaylyn Hewes (Linthicum, Md./North County) both tallied three goals as the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse lost its ODAC opener to Washington and Lee 19-10 Saturday afternoon at Day Field.
The Yellow Jackets (3-6, 0-1 ODAC) trailed by two late in the first half before the Generals (7-4, 3-0 ODAC) pulled away in the second half.
W&L scored 26 seconds into the game before Hewes responded with the tying goal two minutes later. The Generals netted the next two goals before junior Lexi Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) connected on a free position shot to make it a one-goal game. W&L would scored the next three goals to take a 6-2 advantage with 20:10 left in the first period. Hsieh scored twice in the next minute to make it a 6-4 contest. After the Generals added a goal, Hewes had two of the game's next three goals, and Hsieh added her third goal as R-MC trailed 9-7 with just under seven minutes left. W&L would register the final two goals of the period to take an 11-7 lead at intermission. R-MC had eight shots on goal in the first half and seven goals, including 4 of 5 on free-position shots.
W&L scored the first six goals of the second half. Junior Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) netted two goals in the second period for the Yellow Jackets and sophomore Julia Bain (Nokesville, Va./Patriot) registered the game's final goal.
The teams were even at 13-13 on ground balls. Senior Sarah Alvanos (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) paced R-MC with three. Freshman Bella Samper (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) led the Yellow Jackets with four draw controls, while Hsieh and Hannah Jones both grabbed three.
Alvanos and Hannah Jones both caused a pair of turnovers.
Sophomore Elicia Wells (Richmond, Va./Trinity) recorded eight saves for the Yellow Jackets.
Randolph-Macon hits the road for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest at Roanoke on Wednesday, April 4.
