SALEM, Va. - Junior Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) scored a career-high four goals, including three in the second half, as the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team posted a 17-13 victory at Roanoke in ODAC action Wednesday evening.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the ODAC. R-MC had five players tally multiple goals. The Maroons fell to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
After RC tallied the game's first goal, junior Lexi Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) tied it six minutes into the contest. The Maroons netted the next two goals before Hannah Jones and senior Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored to level the game at 3-3 with 17:23 left in the first period. RC reclaimed the lead before freshman Bella Samper (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) and Hsieh added goals to give the Yellow Jackets their first lead at 5-4 with 11:26 remaining. After the Maroons tied it a minute later, junior Saunders Riley (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) would score three of the game's next five goals. The third came with one second left, assisted by Hsieh, as the Yellow Jackets took an 8-7 lead at intermission.
The Yellow Jackets had four of the first five goals of the second half, as Samper, Lexi Jones, Hannah Jones and senior Lucy Andrews (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) all scored to give R-MC a 12-8 lead with 22:37 left in the period. RC tallied three straight to pull within one before Hannah Jones converted a free position shot to give the Yellow Jackets a 13-11 edge with 10:16 remaining. It sparked a five-goal outburst, as Hannah Jones scored twice, followed by senior Alex Lightfoot (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson), freshman Kaylyn Hewes (Linthicum, Md./North County) and Hsieh gave R-MC a 17-11 advantage with 2:14 left. The Maroons scored twice in the final two minutes to make the final score 17-13.
Hsieh and Riley both had three goals, while Samper and Lexi Jones both netted two. Hsieh topped the victors with six draw controls. Lightfoot, senior Sarah Alvanos (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford), sophomore Mary Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), junior Abby Roth (Bayville, N.J./Donovan Catholic) and junior Olivia Mott (Dayton, Md./River Hill) each had three ground balls. Roth paced the R-MC with three caused turnovers.
Sophomore Elicia Wells (Richmond, Va./Trinity) recorded 15 saves, her second-highest total of the season. She had eight saves in the second half.
Randolph-Macon returns home on Saturday, April 7 for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest against Guilford on Day Field.
