Balanced Offense, Strong Defense Lead R-MC Women’s Lax to 19-6 Win over GC

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored five goals, freshman Bella Samper (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) tallied a season-high four goals, and senior Alex Lightfoot (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) dished out five assists as the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team registered a 19-6 ODAC victory over Guilford on Saturday afternoon on Day Field.

The Yellow Jackets (5-6, 2-1 ODAC) had 10 different players score against the Quakers (6-6, 1-3 ODAC).

Samper would score three of R-MC's first four goals, with Hsieh tallying the other, as the Yellow Jackets built a 4-1 lead in the first eight minutes of the contest. Junior Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) and junior Saunders Riley (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) sandwiched a goal by GC as R-MC went up 6-2 with 16:53 left in the first half. After the Quakers cut the deficit to three, the Yellow Jackets would put up six straight goals to take a 12-3 advantage with 3:22 remaining. Hsieh had two of those half-dozen goals, with single scores by sophomore Mary Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), Hanna Jones, her sister junior Lexi Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) and Lightfoot. After GC scored to stop the run, senior Lucy Andrews (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) recorded the final goal of the half with 1:13 left to give R-MC a 13-4 lead at intermission.

The Yellow Jackets would put up the first five goals of the second half, as Hsieh put up two and Samper, senior Frankie Willing (Salisbury, Md./Worcester) and sophomore Julia Bain (Nokesville, Va./Patriot) each recorded one as the advantage ballooned to 18-4 with 13 minutes remaining. Riley had the final goal for the Yellow Jackets in the 19-6 victory.

Hsieh continues to lead the ODAC with 41 goals and is tied for the points lead with 46. Hsieh is third in program history with 235 goals. She is 21 goals away from tying the school record of 256, set by Erin Reidy (1999-02). Lightfoot tops the conference with 26 assists. She has 153 career assists, the second-highest total in program history. Lightfoot is 10 away from the record of 163, owned by Angela Bisland (1999-02).

R-MC held a 17-9 advantage in draw controls. Freshman Kaylyn Hewes (Linthicum, Md./North County) paced the Yellow Jackets with six, while Hsieh and Hannah Jones both grabbed three. Hannah Jones topped the team with four ground balls, while Castle, Samper and Lexi Jones each picked up three.

The Yellow Jacket defense allowed just six goals, the second-lowest total of the season. GC had just two goals in the second half. Hannah Jones and senior Sarah Alvanos (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) both had three caused turnovers.

Sophomore Elicia Wells (Richmond, Va./Trinity) and sophomore Katie Thompson (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) combined on the victory in goal for the Yellow Jackets. Wells recorded a pair of saves in the first half.

Randolph-Macon hits the road to play an ODAC contest at Bridgewater on Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m.
