Strong First Half Leads R-MC Women's Lacrosse past BC 17-10

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Junior Saunders Riley (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) matched her career high with six goals, including four in the first half, as the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team registered a 17-10 victory at Bridgewater in ODAC action Wednesday evening.

The Yellow Jackets (6-6, 3-1 ODAC) have won three straight and remain in a tie for second in the conference standings. The Eagles dropped to 8-3 overall and 2-2 in ODAC play.

R-MC would never trail, scoring twice in the game's first 34 seconds on goals by senior Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and freshman Bella Samper (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak). After BC cut the deficit in half, Samper and Riley added scores to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-1 lead with 23:45 left in the first half. The teams alternated the next seven goals, as Hsieh scored twice and junior Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) once as R-MC led 7-5 with 13:25 remaining. The Yellow Jackets tallied the final six goals of the half, with three by Riley and single scores by Samper, junior Lexi Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) and junior Rachel Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) as R-MC took a 13-5 lead at intermission.

The Yellow Jackets scored four of the first five goals in the second half, as Riley and Hannah Jones both had two as R-MC pushed its advantage to 17-6 with 11:50 remaining in the contest. The Eagles netted the final four goals of the game as it ended 17-10.

Hsieh, Samper and Hannah Jones each recorded three goals, while Jones added a pair of assists.

R-MC held a 19-10 advantage in draw controls. Hannah Jones led all players with nine, while Hsieh picked up five and freshman Kaylyn Hewes (Linthicum, Md./North County) grabbed three.

Senior Sarah Alvanos (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) and junior Olivia Mott (Dayton, Md./River Hill) topped the victors with three ground balls, while Hsieh and sophomore Elicia Wells (Richmond, Va./Trinity) both had two.

Mott paced the Yellow Jacket defense with five caused turnovers. Junior Abby Roth (Bayville, N.J./Donovan Catholic) added three.

Wells registered 12 saves, including eight in the first half.

Randolph-Macon remains on the road with a 4 p.m. ODAC contest at Shenandoah on Saturday, April 14.
