Hannah Jones Nets Game-Winner for R-MC Women's Lax at SU

WINCHESTER, Va. - Junior Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) scored a career-high seven goals, including the game-winner with 4:14 remaining, as the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team pulled out a 15-14 ODAC victory at Shenandoah on Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets (7-6, 4-1 ODAC) have won four straight games and are alone in second place in the conference standings. The Hornets dropped to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in ODAC play.

SU scored five of the game's first six goals in taking a 5-1 lead with 14 minutes left in the first half. Freshman Bella Samper (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) had the lone early goal for R-MC. Hannah Jones and her sister, sophomore Lexi Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) netted consecutive goals as the Yellow Jackets pulled within two at 5-3 with 12 minutes left. After a Hornet goal, Hannah Jones got her second goal to make it 6-4. SU again went up three before senior Alex Lightfoot (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) scored with 2:13 left to make it 7-5. The Hornets had the final goal of the half with 37 seconds remaining as R-MC trailed 8-5 at intermission.

Hannah Jones had the first goal of the second half, but an SU score gave the home team a 9-6 advantage four minutes into the second half. The Yellow Jackets would net the next five goals, with senior Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tallying three and Hannah Jones recording two as R-MC took an 11-9 lead with 21:30 remaining. SU cut it to one before Hannah Jones' sixth goal put the Yellow Jackets up 12-10 midway through the second half. The Hornets scored twice in less than a minute to level the score at 12-12 with 13 minutes left. Sophomore Julia Bain (Nokesville, Va./Patriot) and sophomore Mary Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) picked up goals to put R-MC ahead 14-12 with 9:20 left. SU got the next two score to tie it at 14-14 with 7:45 left. Hannah Jones would score on an assist by Hsieh with 4:14 remaining to give the Yellow Jackets a 15-14 edge. SU had three shots and two turnovers in the final four minutes as R-MC held on for the victory.

Hannah Jones had eight total shots and scored on each of her seven shots on goal. She led the Yellow Jackets with seven draw controls.

Hsieh had two assists to go along with her three goals. She also had six draw controls.

Samper and junior Abby Roth (Bayville, N.J./Donovan Catholic) paced the Yellow Jackets with three ground balls. Roth also had two caused turnovers.

Randolph-Macon returns to Day Field to host Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, April 25 at 7 p.m. It will be Senior Night, as the Yellow Jackets recognize their Class of 2018 prior to the game.
