ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Lexi Mallory (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) scored her first goal of the season with 50 seconds left in the first half as the seventh-seeded Randolph-Macon women's soccer team edged No. 10 Guilford 1-0 Monday evening at Day Field in the first round of the ODAC Tournament.
The Yellow Jackets (7-7-3) advance to play at second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in the ODAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday, Nov. 2. R-MC and VWC played to a 1-1 tie during the regular season.
The Quakers end their season with a 6-9-1 mark.
R-MC held an 11-1 advantage in shots in the first period, but the match was scoreless until Mallory was able to head in a saved shot in the 45th minute to give the home team a 1-0 edge. Sophomore Jenna Burns (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) earned the assist for the victors.
The Yellow Jackets kept the pressure on in the second half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net as the 1-0 R-MC advantage held up.
The R-MC defense, led by senior Caroline Hollandsworth (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield), senior Alivia Thorn (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover), senior Morgan Gray (Aldie, Va./Freedom), sophomore Maddie Burns (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) and sophomore Mary Virginia Kelley (Midlothian, Va./James River), recorded its second straight shutout over Guilford and its eighth shutout of the season. They did not allow the Quakers to have a shot on goal.
For the match, the Yellow Jackets held a 17-2 advantage on shots. Junior Kasey Martino (Centreville, Va./Centreville) led the way with five shots and one on goal, while freshman Kasey Booth (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) added four shots. Mallory and freshman Gabby Nelson (Clover, Va./Halifax County) both had three shots, with all being on goal for Nelson and two on goal for Mallory.
