ASHLAND, Va. - Junior Maddie Burns (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) scored on a pair of headers, and freshman Casey Kent (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) posted a goal and two assists, as the Randolph-Macon women's soccer team downed Eastern Mennonite 5-0 in ODAC action Wednesday evening on Day Field.
The Yellow Jackets (7-4-1, 4-2 ODAC) have won two straight, four of five and six of their past eight matches. The R-MC defense has recorded five shutouts in its past seven outings. The Royals fell to 3-7-2 overall, 1-4 in ODAC play.
Burns headed in a corner kick from Kent three minutes into the match to give the Yellow Jackets the early lead. It was the first goal of the season for Burns. Even though R-MC had a 15-2 edge in shots in the first half, the game remained 1-0 at intermission.
Burns and Kent combined on a second goal in the 57th minute, as Burns again headed in a corner kick to give the home team a 2-0 advantage. Senior Courtney Taylor (Prince George, Va./Prince George) netted her second goal of the season in the 64th minute to extend the lead to 3-0. Kent scored a minute later on an assist by senior Kasey Martino (Centreville, Va./Centreville) to push the advantage to 4-0. It was Kent's third goal of the season. Freshman Meghan Skevington (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) registered her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 76th minute to make the final 5-0.
For the match, R-MC held a 25-2 edge in shots, including 10-0 in the second half. Sophomore Gabby Nelson (Clover, Va./Halifax County) paced the Yellow Jackets with eight shots, while Burns had five shots, of which four were on goal.
R-MC took 14 corner kicks, while EMU had none.
