ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon's Women's Tennis sneaked by Bridgewater College with a 5-4 victory Saturday afternoon in conference action at the Banks Tennis Center. R-MC (4-2, 2-1 ODAC) won two of three doubles matches and three of six singles matches to walk away winners over the Eagles (6-4, 3-1 ODAC)
In the doubles matches, the #1 duo of junior Stephanie Yeager (Fairfax, Va. / Robinson Secondary) and sophomore Kristin Dantzler (Williamsburg, Va. / York) were not able to overcome the Eagles #1 duo of Jamiah Lewis and Whitney Kiser, dropping their sets 3-8.
But in #2 and #3 doubles, Randolph-Macon found more success. Junior Gaby Tersigni (Yorktown, Va. / York) and freshman Olivia Uzer (McLean, Va. / Langley) won 8-5 over Nicole Shifflett and Stephanie Barton. Sophomore Landon Aud (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) and senior Sarah Hinson (Nashville, N.C. / Northern Nash) had the largest margin of victory in doubles for the afternoon, winning 8-3.
With the 2-1 lead heading into the singles competition, BC and R-MC battled up and down the lineup. Tersigni got the most decisive singles victory of the afternoon from the #1 spot, winning 6-1, 6-0 over Lewis. Kiser was able to get the better of Yeager 4-6, 0-6.
Dantzler and Aud both secured wins in singles to ensure R-MC walked away with the 5-4 win as well. Dantzler defeated Shifflett 6-2, 6-0 and Aud won against Rachel Zarin 6-3, 6-2.
R-MC was two tie-break sets away from two other wins, but both Uzer and freshman Isabel Wadsworth (Lake Wales, Fla. / Lake Wales) were not able to come away with the wins in the deciding sets, scoring Bridgewater two additional wins in singles. Stephanie Barton won against Uzer 2-6, 7-5, 0-1, while Rachel Crawford defeated Wadsworth 3-6, 7-6, 0-1.
Randolph-Macon faces Washington College tomorrow at 1:00 PM at the Banks Tennis Center.
