LYNCHBURG, Va. – Randolph-Macon Women's Tennis topped Randolph College 5-4 Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg. R-MC moved to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while Randolph dropped to 8-5 and 5-4 in the conference.
The first two matches to finish were completed in R-MC's favor. The #3 doubles pair of senior Sarah Hinson (Nashville, N.C. / Northern Nash) and sophomore Landon Aud (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) won with an 8-0 sweep of Randolph's Sarah Mueller and Ranita Opoku-Sarfo.
Junior Stephanie Yeager (Fairfax, Va. / Robinson Secondary) and freshman Olivia Uzer (McLean, Va. / Langley) won for the second time in as many matches, paired together for just the second time in #2 doubles. They defeated Randolph's Lauren Appel and Ashley Schmitz 8-3.
RC also got wins in the first three singles competition matches. Jin, Schmitz and Hawn got wins over Tersigni, Yeager and Dantzler in #1, #2 and #3 singles respectively. Tersigini gave Jin a tough match, going 2-6, 6-4, 6-7.
Yeager also forced a third set with Schmitz, as she won the second set, but dropped the first and third to lose the match.
Hawn defeated Dantzler 1-6, 2-6 in #3 singles.
Uzer got R-MC back on track in #4 singles. She defeated Appel 7-5, 6-3. Uzer is now 8-2 on the season, including 7-2 from the #4 slot.
Aud also got a victory in #5 singles. She defeated Mueller 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Aud is now 9-2 on the season, including 7-2 from the #5 spot.
With the overall decision down to the last finishing #6 singles, Hinson proved victorious in three sets against Opoku-Sarfo. Opoku-Sarfo won the first set 6-1. But Hinson secured set two 6-3 and set three 6-2 to ensure R-MC's overall victory.
Tomorrow's match with Hollins has been postponed because of forecasted rains and storms across Virginia. A makeup date will be announced later. R-MC is next set to face Roanoke at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 21 at the Banks Tennis Center.
