R-MC Volleyball NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals Preview

ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon women’s volleyball team will face Carthage in the quarterfinals of the 2015 NCAA Tournament in Grand Rapids, MI on the campus of Calvin College on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets won the Galloway Regional to advance to the National Quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

Joining the Yellow Jackets (28-7) in Michigan are: Wittenberg (27-2), California Lutheran (28-5), Carthage (34-7), Clarkson (30-8), Bethel (25-9), Hendrix (28-8) and Bowdoin (26-4).

R-MC has had two common opponents with Carthage: Wittenberg and Hiram. The Yellow Jackets went 0-2 against the pair while the Lady Reds split the duo, sweeping Hiram while dropping a four-set match to Wittenberg.

Randolph-Macon is 0-1 all-time against Carthage, 1-0 against Clarkson, 0-2 in matches against Wittenberg and has never faced the rest of the remaining teams.

Calvin also hosted an NCAA Regional and was eliminated by the Lady Reds 3-1 in the regional final.

Randolph-Macon is the only school in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference to reach the National Quarterfinals in league history. Washington & Lee and R-MC are the only two schools in the ODAC to advance to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. The Generals reached the Third Round in 2006 and the Yellow Jackets made it in 2010.

R-MC has never played a team from Michigan or any matches in the Great Lake State.

Teams in the field are from Arkansas, California, Maine, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Four of the teams in the field are nationally ranked with the remaining four receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, published on Nov. 10. The top-five nationally ranked teams were eliminated in the regionals. Wittenberg tops the list at No. 6 followed by No. 9 Cal.-Lutheran, No. 13 Carthage and No. 18 Clarkson. Hendrix (No. 26), R-MC (No. 28), Bowdoin (No. 39) and Bethel (No. 43) received votes.

Wittenberg is the only remaining former National Champion. The Tigers defeated Christopher Newport 3-0 in the 2011 Championship.

The Road to Michigan
