LEXINGTON, Va.—Seniors Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, Va. / Nansemond River) and Katie Rossberg (Crozet, Va. / Western Albemarle) recorded 19 and 16 kills, respectively, as the Randolph-Macon women's volleyball team claimed the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) regular season title with a 3-1 victory over Washington and Lee Wednesday evening.
The Yellow Jackets (20-6, 11-0 ODAC) won the first set 25-12. The Generals (17-11, 9-2 ODAC) fought back and tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 score in the second set. R-MC won the third set 25-19 and the fourth set 25-14 to stay undefeated in the ODAC.
R-MC opened the first set on a 12-3 run. The Yellow Jackets held a 19-10 advantage and claimed the set on a 6-2 spurt. Lowers served four straight points to close the set.
The Yellow Jackets held an early 2-1 lead before the Generals tied the score at 2-2 and went on a quick 3-0 run to take the lead for the remainder of the set. R-MC faced a 13-6 deficit but battled back with a 7-2 spurt to come within two points at 15-13. The Generals used a 6-1 run to power ahead 21-14. The Yellow Jackets countered with a 5-2 run to face a 23-19 shortfall. Washington and Lee claimed the second set, 25-21.
The Generals held a 4-1 advantage to begin the third set. R-MC tied the score at 6-6. The Yellow Jackets held a slight 9-7 advantage before the Generals tied the score at 9-all. The score was tied six more times through 15-15, with no team holding more than a one-point lead. The Yellow Jackets won the set, 25-19, on a 10-4 spurt.
The Yellow Jackets opened the fourth set on a 4-1 run. Washington & Lee came within one-point at 4-3 before R-MC went on a 5-1 spurt to rebuild their lead to five points. The Yellow Jackets held a four-point lead at 14-10 and had to overcome several stoppages in play for moisture on the Generals' side of the court as they closed the set on an 11-4 run to stay undefeated in the ODAC and clinch the regular season title.
Sophomore Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va. / Peninsula Catholic) paced R-MC with 21 digs. Lowers added 15 digs.
Lowers and Martin each recorded three service aces in the victory.
R-MC tallied 12 assisted blocks. Seniors Emily Ortiz (Williamsburg, Va. / Jamestown) and Addie Cooper (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cape Henry Collegiate) and sophomore Colleen Beaver (Fredericksburg, Va. / Massaponax) led the Yellow Jackets with three assisted blocks.
The Yellow Jackets complete regular season play this weekend at the Emory Invitational. R-MC will face No. 17 Clarkson on Friday, Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. before facing Millsaps at noon and Berry at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31.
