Virginia Beach, Va. – The Randolph-Macon women's volleyball team moved to 3-0 on the season with a pair of victories over Cabrini and Benedictine (Ill.) in the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament Saturday. The Yellow Jackets dropped just three sets in the whole tournament while winning a total of nine including Friday night's 3-0 victory over St. Catherine.
Randolph-Macon 3, Cabrini 2
The Cavaliers gave the Yellow Jackets a tough game, forcing a game five after ceding games one and two to R-MC, but winning games three and four. R-MC got the decisive game five victory 15-7.
The Yellow Jackets had four players hit double-digit kills in the match against the Cavaliers. Junior Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) and sophomore Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) both tallied 15 kills apiece. Clark also added four blocks total, two of them being solo efforts. Hall added three assisted blocks as well.
R-MC was also led by senior Morgan Seal (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian), who racked up 14 kills. Seal added an assisted block to the team's win.
Senior Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va/Kettle Run) added 11 kills, helping the Yellow Jackets to the win.
Senior Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) and freshman Angela Tender (Manassas, Va./Stone Bridge) split the bulk of the setting duties with Quinn helping her teammates 25 times and Tender set up 22 volleys.
Senior Colleen Beaver (Fredricksburg, Va./Massaponax) led the defensive effort with six solo blocks and one assisted block to total seven on the game. Junior Emily Fitzwater (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) added three total blocks as well, two of them being solo efforts.
Randolph-Macon 3, Benedictine (Ill.) 1
Randolph-Macon continued the winning ways just a few hours later during tournament play. R-MC won the first two games before the Eagles stormed back winning game three, 25-20. The Yellow Jackets secured the tournament sweep with a 25-19 game four win.
It was a complete team effort as 17 players checked into the game during the outing.
McGilvery led the scoring with 16 kills. She added a service ace to the effort as well. Clark was also a team leader, killing 15 volleys and making just three errors, tallying a .387 kill percentage.
Sophomore Bre Lockhart (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) made her season debut, killing nine volleys. Senior Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) added two service aces to the Yellow Jackets' efforts.
Quinn, Tender and a pair of freshmen, Emma Young (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and Emily Steffan (Salem, Va./Salem) got opportunities to set up their teammates. Quinn had 16 assists and Tender added 12, as did Steffan. Young put six assists out for her teammates as well.
Seal added a solo block in this game as did three other players, sophomore Bailey Jones (Suffolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate), sophomore Kai Cunningham (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) and freshman Becca Madgwick (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge).
The team's next five games will be in Fredericksburg, Va. as they take on Mary Washington on Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. and then participate in the Mary Washington Invitational Friday and Saturday.
