LYNCHBURG, Va. – For the second time in as many days, Randolph-Macon defeated an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Hornet foe – with Friday night's victim being Lynchburg College. The Yellow Jackets won 3-0 (25-12, 25-6, 25-15). It's the second match in a row that R-MC beat an opponent in straight sets after beating Shenandoah Wednesday night, 3-0. Randolph-Macon moves to 8-3 on the season and 2-0 in the ODAC. Lynchburg falls to 5-4 and 0-2.
With the first set tied 4-4, freshman Angela Tender (Manassas, Va. / Stone Bridge) served up five straight points for the Yellow Jackets, pushing the set to 9-4. After Lynchburg made up some ground, Randolph-Macon continued to push the Hornets with a point run of 11-3, moving the set to 21-11. After trading a few more points, senior Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va. / Peninsula Catholic) sealed it with a service ace and forced Lynchburg into an attack error to end the set with R-MC on top 25-12.
The Yellow Jackets didn't allow Lynchburg out of the single digits in the second set. After tying it 1-1, LC didn't see another serve for seven points as senior Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va. / Kettle Run) served up excellent opportunities for her teammates, including a service ace. After one LC point, junior Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va. / Riverheads) added a pair of service aces, helping push the score to 13-3 before another side-out. Lynchburg began to get competitive during the middle of the set, but never could muster two in a row. Randolph-Macon ripped off the final five points with senior Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) in the service role to win the set 25-7. Randolph-Macon did not commit a single hitting error in the entire set, finishing with a hitting percentage of .609. The team didn't hit below .370 in the whole match.
With the possibility of the match set in the balance, Lynchburg jumped out to the 2-0 lead in the third set. R-MC fought back, tying it at 3 apiece before scoring the next three points. R-MC and Lynchburg continued to trade close points until the score got to 11-8. That's when Randolph-Macon started to hit its stride, firing off runs of 7-3 and 5-0, scoring the final five points with freshman Mackenzie Loewe (Leonardtown, Md. / St. Mary's Ryken) in service to win 25-15.
Serving was a huge aspect of R-MC's game Friday with Clark, Loewe and McGilvery each tallying two service aces and Quinn, Sallade and Tender adding one each. Clark and sophomore Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) were the kill leaders for the Yellow Jackets with 11 each. Hall did not commit a single error on her 15 total attacks.
Defensively, Sallade led the dig effort, checking in with 11. McGilvery added seven digs and Quinn added six. Up front, senior Colleen Beaver (Fredericksburg, Va. / Massaponax) had two blocks while senior Morgan Seal (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) and McGilvery each had one. Seal also had three kills and Beaver added two.
Both Quinn and Tender set up their teammates well in the match with each totaling 14. Sallade also put in a huge effort in the setting arena with seven.
Sophomore Emily Fitzwater (Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) had a perfect kill percentage, attacking five times and killing all five. Sophomore Emily Steffan (Salem, Va. / Salem) had the same experience in her one set of action, killing the one attack she attempted.
Randolph-Macon is back in action Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM as it takes on the Randolph Wildcats. The team returns home Tuesday night against Marymount at 7:00 PM.
