ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) paced the victors with 26 digs, including 10 in the first and third games, as the Randolph-Macon volleyball team swept Bridgewater 3-0 Wednesday evening in ODAC action in Crenshaw Gym.
The Yellow Jackets (16-4, 8-0 ODAC) posted wins of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-18 over the Eagles (17-6, 6-3 ODAC). R-MC, in first place in the ODAC and ranked No. 4 in the first NCAA regional rankings for the South Region, has won 12 of its past 13 matches.
Sophomore Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) led all players with 11 kills and had 28 total attacks for R-MC. Junior Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) had 10 kills and 31 attacks. Senior Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) had 30 total attacks and nine kills.
R-MC jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in Game 1. BC used an 8-3 run to take an 8-6 lead. The Yellow Jackets put up four straight points to reclaim the lead at 10-8. The Eagles scored three of the next four points to level the score at 11-11. R-MC would put up three straight points to assume a 14-11 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. The advantage grew to 17-12 before BC cut the deficit to three at 19-16. The Yellow Jackets tallied four straight to make the score 23-16 before finishing with a 25-18 win. R-MC had a hit percentage of .186, compared to .065 for BC. Clark had five kills and 14 total attacks, while McGilvery had four kills and 10 attacks in the first game. Quinn had five assists, while Sallade recorded 10 digs.
The Yellow Jackets got a quick two points to start the second game and would never trail. R-MC pushed the lead to 4-1 before the Eagles cut the deficit to two at 5-3. With the home team holding a 6-4 lead, the Yellow Jackets tallied four straight points to take their largest lead at 10-4. BC would put up five of the next seven points to make it a 12-9 contest. The Eagles cut the deficit to one at 17-16 before R-MC recorded five of the next six points to go up 22-17. The teams alternated points before a kill by sophomore Alexia Wolfe (Midlothian, Va./James River) made the final 25-20. Hall had five kills and nine total attacks, helping the Yellow Jackets post a hit percentage of .333, compared to .107 for BC. Quinn had six assists and Sallade registered six digs.
After the Eagles tallied the first point in Game 3, the Yellow Jackets scored four of the next five points and would not trail again. The teams stayed with two points of each other before R-MC put up three straight to take a 15-12 advantage. The lead grew to 17-13 before two points by BC made it 17-15. The Yellow Jackets grabbed three straight points to make it 20-15 and took their largest lead at seven at 24-17. A kill by Hall made the final 25-18. R-MC had a hit percentage of .217, with BC at .082. Hall had six kills in the final game, while Sallade recorded 10 digs.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Friday, Oct. 20, with a 6 p.m. home ODAC contest against Guilford in Crenshaw Gym.
