Women’s Volleyball Splits At ODAC Tri-Match

EMORY, Va. – Randolph-Macon defeated Emory & Henry but dropped a match to Guilford in a split day at a tri-match in Emory, Va. Saturday afternoon. The earlier match of the day, Guilford (8-6, 2-3  ODAC), was a 3-1 loss for the Yellow Jackets (8-6, 4-1 ODAC), while the afternoon match against the Wasps (4-11, 1-4 ODAC) resulted in a 3-1 win.

Guilford 3, Randolph-Macon 1

Randolph-Macon got a quick start, going up 5-2 to begin the first frame. Guilford kept close until R-MC got on a 9-2 run to go up 18-12. R-MC would finish the set with five straight to win 25-16. But from there, R-MC ran into trouble, especially late in sets. The third set was close early, but Guilford used a 6-2 run to go ahead 17-13, and never let up en route to a 25-17 set win. In the third set, R-MC was ahead by three at 20-17, but Guilford got eight of the next ten points to close the set win 25-22. In the fourth set, Guilford had the lead early 8-4, but R-MC got out in front and led by two for much of the set until GC got two in a row to tie the match at 19. GC's Christian Ritter got three kills in a row to put GC up 21-19, where the Quakers then ran away with the final set 25-21 in what was part of a 8-2 run to finish the set and the win the match.

R-MC hit .438 in the first set, but just .113 from then on, compared to GC's .221 hittiing percentage through the final three sets. R-MC was led by junior Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover), who had 12 kills, followed closely by fellow junior Alexia Wolfe (Midlothian, Va. / James River) with 11 and senior Emily Fitzwater (Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) who had 10. Fitzwater hit .400 on the match and also made a trio of blocks. R-MC was led at the net by freshman Sydney Koch (Raleigh, N.C. / Sanderson), who had four blocks and junior Angela Tender (Manassas, Va. / Stone Bridge) who had two. Tender led R-MC with 29 assists while freshman Macguire Gubba (Grove City, Pa. / Grove City Area) tossed in 13. Fellow freshman Madison Warlick (Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) led the team with 22 digs with Wolfe and Hall behind her with 16 and 14 respectively. Hall and Tender had two service aces each as well.

Randolph-Macon 3, Emory & Henry 1

E&H took an early lead in the second match of the day. Out 8-1, R-MC battled back to bring the match within two. R-MC brought the set to ties a 14-14, 16-16 and 18-18 before jumping out to the 23-20 lead. But the Wasps were able to finish the match on a 6-1 lead winning the first set 26-24. But it would be the only set the Yellow Jackets would cede in the match. After getting out to the 14-12 lead, E&H would only get two more points the rest of the set as R-MC won 25-14. In the third set, a 6-0 lead would give way to a 19-2 advantage en route to a 25-8 victory. In the fourth set, R-MC did not cede a single lead to the Wasps as the Yellow Jackets cruised to the 25-12 set and match win.

Wolfe and Hall led the Yellow Jackets in the second match, each scoring 12 kills. Senior Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) was close behind with nine as well. R-MC was active at the net, with Koch totaling five blocks, Fitzwater with four and Clark and Hall with three each. Tender led the Yellow Jackets with 27 assists with sophomore Emma Young (Highland Park, Ill. / Highland Park) tossing in 11. Wolfe led R-MC with 16 digs while sophomore Mackenzie Loewe (Leonardtown, Md. / St. Mary's Ryken) was close behind with 14. R-MC tallied 12 service aces in the match, with Warlick tallying four, Tender adding three and Koch and Loewe each adding two.
