Parker Makes 26 Kills On Day As Women's Volleyball Wins Twice

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Freshman Grace Parker (Andover, N.J. / Pope John XXIII) made 12 kills in the first match of the day, only to follow up with 14 kills in the nightcap as R-MC went undefeated in its opening weekend, defeating Pitt-Bradford and St. Mary's (Md.), following up on last night's win against Wesley.

Randolph-Macon 3, Pitt-Bradford 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-11)

After tallying a 4-4 tie, Randolph-Macon earned three straight kills as well as a service ace from junior Kristina Smith (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cape Henry). From there, the Yellow Jackets commanded the lead, allowing Pitt-Bradford to score twice in a row on just one more occasion. Meantime, R-MC earned ten of the next 12 points, including seven in a row en route to the 25-12 set victory.

The success continued into the second set. After the 3-3 tie, R-MC scored five in a row as part of scoring nine of the next 11. Parker tallied a service ace and senior Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) made two kills in the sequence. The Yellow Jackets had another 5-0 sequence, which included two kills from sophomore Sydney Koch (Raleigh, N.C. / Sanderson). R-MC won the set 25-13.

Another big run helped R-MC keep its command of the contest. After a tie at 3-3, R-MC fired off nine straight points, including a trio of service aces from Koch as the Yellow Jackets got ahead 12-3. As the Yellow Jackets progressed through the set, they also went on a 8-1 run late before closing the set and the match with the win 25-11.

Outside of Parker's 12 kills, Hall and senior Alexia Wolfe (Midlothian, Va. / James River) each contributed seven and senior Bailey Jones (Suffolk, Va. / Norfolk Collegiate) and Koch both added six. Senior Angela Tender (Manassas, Va. / Stone Bridge) added 25 assists while sophomore Macguire Gubba (Grove City, Pa. / Grove City Area School District) totaled 17. Sophomore Madison Warlick (Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) led the Yellow Jackets defensively with 13 digs. Wolfe had three blocks while Koch added two. The Yellow Jackets hit .394 for the match, including an incredible .500 in the first set.

Randolph-Macon 3, St. Mary's (Md.) 0 (25-8, 25-20, 25-17)

The .500 hitting percentage returned for the first set of the nightcap against the Seahawks. R-MC controlled play, getting ahead 10-0 as Tender hit four service aces in the run. R-MC continued to control the pace before finishing the first set on a 9-2 run to win 25-8.

The second set played much closer than the first. St. Mary's earned ties at 3-3 and 4-4 before R-MC used a 3-0 run to get ahead 7-4. But the Seahawks climbed back with ties at 8-8 before R-MC inched out to a three point lead again thanks to two service aces from Warlick. R-MC kept the lead, despite St. Mary's closing the gap to just one before R-MC hit a 4-0 and a 3-0 run to go up 20-14. St. Mary's never got closer than four as R-MC won 25-20.

The third set started in a similar fashion to the first. The teams played to ties at 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9. Neither team could find a long run, though R-MC never conceded the lead. The Yellow Jackets finally broke the set open at 15-14 as the team rattled off seven points in a row, part of the final push to win the set 25-17.

Parker finished with 14 kills as Hall and Wolfe added seven and Jones tallied four. Jones also added two blocks and Koch and senior Kai Cunningham (Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville) each had one. Tender finished with six service aces and 22 assists. Gubba added 14 assists. Parker also led the team in digs with eight while Warlick added seven.
